The use of home landlines seems to be becoming a thing of the past as many now use mobile handsets as their main phone in or out of the home. It seems Panasonic have come upon the idea that if wireless/mobile reception were better while indoors them maybe even more will come away from landlines in favour of the mobile alternative.

So to this end, Panasonic has come up with Link to Cell base station, which is basically a Bluetooth connected base station which links your mobile handset so if you receive a wireless call it will come on your mobile but then the Panasonic Link to Cell will ring your home phone when you receive a call on your mobile handset.

Your handset connects with Link to Cell base station which allows the user to put their handset in any particular corner to gain good reception. Six satellite handsets can be connected throughout the home while each handset being DECT 6.0. As a final touch, the Panasonic home phone handsets are all RoHS certified. Panasonic’s Link to Cell is available not at $99.99 whit a single home handset with additional handsets costing $39.99.

A mural of good times, growing up

Sitting on my back step, elbows on knees, cupping a wine glass, I study the mural that stretches along one side of our backyard fence.

It starts on one end with a tropical island, where a crab makes a grab at a purple Teletubby, two little girls in grass skirts do the hula, and a worried-looking cat sits precariously close to the ocean’s edge. then, in a swirl of waves, the mural becomes an underwater scene dotted with mermaids, scuba divers and fish, all painted in the bright colors that appeal to a kid.

Artistically, it isn’t impressive. more like something out of a "Little Mermaid" coloring book than a Diego Rivera. It is colorful but faded, fanciful but dated.

Anyone who studies it long enough will notice that the parasailing guy has two right hands, and jellyfish don’t actually have eyes. but when you know that each character represents someone who was important in our lives during my son’s first year, it’s a real work of art.

And it has been the backdrop of our lives for almost 12 years.

I sketched the mural shortly before my son’s first birthday, using black paint on the all-white wall, and left it like that.

Then, at Sawyer’s luau-themed party, guests in plastic leis and Hawaiian shirts brought to life the character that represented each of them, painting college logos on T-shirts and stripes on bathing trunks. They blued their eyes, highlighted their hair and added freckles.

The people at Sawyer’s birthday party were there through that tough and tiring first year of my son’s life, telling me I could when I thought I couldn’t.

And as they populated the mural that day, it felt like a contract — signed in red, blue, yellow and green — that they would stick around for whatever came next.

As a toddler, Sawyer would drag his chubby fingers along the mural, stopping at each of the figures painted there. he would poke Tinky Winky in one crooked eye, pat Sonnet, his half sister who’s a mermaid on the wall, and kiss his favorite: "Nana!"

The painted Sawyer waves from the lap of his mother, who looks thinner in paint than real life. my cousin Tiffany, who took care of Sawyer after I went back to work, stands protectively over both of us.

Sawyer’s half brother, Skyler, wears a snorkel and holds a sign that’s hard to read now but used to say, "Fish are our friends. Eat tofu." I can barely make out Sawyer’s other half sister, Savannah, who’s riding an inner tube.

Sawyer’s father scuba dives, wearing yellow shorts with red hearts. my friends are on the wall, too, some disguised as mermaids. Tom and Amy ride a surfboard. Judie shakes Steve from a coconut tree.

Every night Sawyer would take inventory of the people in his world, and I would watch from this same step, calling out the name of each person he touched. It was a lovely, calming rhythm in our lives.

Cousin Kasey wrestling the purple octopus for a basketball. Her little brother, Virgil Jr., pulling at her shirt. Uncle Danny playing an electric guitar under water, fish groupies surrounding him.

They were all there within reach of Sawyer’s fingertips, and for me, too.

I have sat out here a thousand times over the years, in the quiet after the dishes were washed and the boy in bed. I confided in the painted figures, telling them my worries about whether I picked the right school, said the right thing or made the right choice.

For a single mother, they were an ideal audience, never interrupting, always there and in silent, unanimous agreement with everything I said.

They witnessed Sawyer learning to kick a ball, climb a tree and swim, sometimes from the wall and sometimes in real life. They serve as a colorful backdrop for birthday parties and family portraits, and stand guard when we take the trash to the alley in the dark.

But now the mural is fading, beaten by regular attacks of sprinklers, the blazing sun and time. In some places, the paint has rubbed off completely.

And so much has changed since the mural went up. A few people have moved away. Skyler no longer is a vegetarian. Little cousin Virgil Jr. is a U.S. Marine fighting in Afghanistan. A dog lives here now. and Sawyer is going on 13.

I could restore it, perhaps like the Sistine Chapel, if I had the time. or paint over it, giving us a new canvas. or paint over it and leave it, letting it fade into the background again.

My need to do something about the mural coincides with a time when I’m beginning to let go of my son. Sawyer is deciding for himself whether he needs a jacket, setting his own alarm (and occasionally getting up when it goes off), doing homework on his own, and going more places with his friends and fewer with his mom. It makes me nostalgic for that toddler child.

When we first talked about what to do about the aging mural, Sawyer said to leave it. He’s not big on change. he doesn’t even like it when we get a new car (a total of two in his lifetime).

But now, coming out to sit next to me on the back step, he says we may as well paint over it to match the other walls.

"We’ll still know they are there," Sawyer says.

There if we need them.

PASADENA – A massive windstorm packing hurricane-force gusts blasted through the San Gabriel Valley early Thursday, damaging buildings, downing trees and knocking out power to thousands across the region.

Temple City, Sierra Madre, San Marino and Pasadena were especially hard hit by the 70 mph winds that left a trail of destruction from Boyle Heights in East Los Angeles to Irwindale and Azusa. most San Marino and Temple City residents were without power into the evening Thursday.

Los Angeles County and several Valley cities – including Pasadena, Sierra Madre, Monrovia, Arcadia, Glendora, Alhambra and South Pasadena – declared states of emergency. Schools – public and private – from Pasadena to Glendora were either closed or operated on a modified schedule Thursday.

Pasadena officials kept city staffers on the job overnight and asked residents to brace for a second round of intense winds through this morning.

“We want people in Pasadena to make sure their emergency kits are in place,” city spokeswoman Ann Erdman said. “(The city) will continue to have city crews in the community all day today, as well as tonight to assess damage and respond to issues.”

The wild windstorm spread across six Western states, with high-wind warnings issued in parts of California, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico and Wyoming.

The ravaging winds snarled air traffic and delayed flights throughout the region. Los Angeles International Airport was closed Wednesday night, and some flights into Bob Hope Airport in Burbank were diverted to L.A./Ontario International Airport, officials said.

The National Weather Service called the event the strongest windstorm in the region in years.

A gust of 97 mph was recorded at Whitaker Peak in the San Gabriel Mountains, officials said.

The damage wrought by the windstorm toppled or severely damaged nearly 450 trees in Pasadena alone.

Residents evacuated

Pasadena officials counted 200 damaged buildings. Of those, 45 units were red-tagged – 40 units in one building alone – and 13 were yellow- tagged.

A red tag means a structure is unsafe to inhabit. A yellow tag indicates a structure must be inspected before it can be inhabited.

Residents of red-tagged units were evacuated. Thirty- six Pasadena residents were provided with temporary shelter at Robinson Park Center on North fair Oaks Avenue. By 9 p.m. officials had found temporary shelter for all but a handful.

The most damaged structure was a red-tagged apartment building in the 1200 block of North Hudson Avenue. A Shell gas station at the corner of San Gabriel and Colorado boulevards also was red-tagged.

At least four Pasadena residents were injured, with one person taken to Huntington Hospital in critical condition after a fire near North fair Oaks Avenue and Penn Street, officials said.

City officials said damage estimates will not be available for several days.

As many as 6,000 Pasadena Water and Power customers woke up to no power on Thursday, said Erica Rolufs, a PWP spokeswoman. at 9 p.m., 1,500 people were still without power.

Across the region, more than 226,000 Southern California Edison customers – residents and businesses – lost power, SCE officials said.

Los Angeles County Public Works spokesman Bob Spencer said damage reports flooded officials throughout the day.

“There remains the possibility of additional damage as these strong winds persist,” Spencer said.

Some cities spared

despite recording some of the highest wind readings in the region, Glendora, Azusa and much of the eastern San Gabriel Valley were spared the massive damage inflicted on their western neighbors. Still, many eastern Valley cities experienced power outages.

Phone lines for the Glendora Police Department were down in the early morning but began working once emergency backup power came online, said Councilman Joe Santoro.

Many of the calls police received throughout the day were from senior citizens who needed power to run medical devices. Glendora made its Crowther Teen Center available to those who needed an electrical hookup for such equipment, Santoro said.

Glendora officials declared a state of emergency to make the city eligible for federal funding for cleanup.

Pasadena officials also will look for state and federal help in the cleanup effort.

“The possibility is there for us to recoup some of the cost of cleaning up,” Erdman said. It will be an administrative decision, which agency (FEMA or state officials) to be contacted for a request.”

However, both federal and state officials say it’s too early to determine whether cities or counties will be eligible for financial assistance.

Azusa experienced widespread power outages early Thursday morning, City Manager Fran Delach said.

Workers managed to restore power by mid-morning, but not before an outage interrupted operations at a city-owned water treatment plant, Delach said.

Emergency backup generators prevented problems for water customers.

“We’ve had a significant response from our police, Light and Water and Public Works crews,” said Delach, who estimated cleanup costs at about $92,000.

Gladstone Avenue, east of Azusa Avenue, remained closed to through traffic for much of the day due to a large Southern California Edison power pole that snapped off at its base and was leaning precariously over a senior citizen housing complex.

Mission damaged

Azusa resident Tina Ramirez woke up to find a 30-foot pine tree uprooted and resting in her front yard. Her neighbors couldn’t even get out of their driveways until workers cleaned up the mess.

“We’re pretty fortunate because my husband usually parks there,” she said. “It was crazy. I kept waking up last night. I’ve never seen the winds that forceful.”

Workers from Humberto’s Tree Service removed the tree and trimmed two others.

“What happens when a tree gets top heavy, even if it’s pretty rooted into the ground, it will come out during winds like this,” said Richard Parra, the son of the company’s owner.

The San Gabriel Mission suffered significant damage when a 70-foot eucalyptus tree snapped in the Mission Cemetery.

A large crucifix memorial to the Tongva Indians and to the Claretian priests in the Mission Cemetery was broken, spokesman Chuck Lyons said. The life-size image of Jesus nailed to a huge wooden cross had been there since Good Friday in 1935.

While damage was heavy across the foothills, some cities were spared. there were no reports of significant damage in Diamond Bar, West Covina or San Dimas.

Assistant San Dimas City Manager Ken Duran said the city had “a significant number of downed trees,” but work crews were able to clean up most by 9 a.m.

Meanwhile, the Rose Bowl was spared of any major damage, Erdman said.

The stadium, which is undergoing a $156 million renovation, suffered no structural damage, she said.

The San Gabriel Valley Humane Society in San Gabriel was also scrambling to cope with damage. Humane Society President Pat Brayer said a large tree fell between midnight and 7 a.m., knocking over a fence and landing on the building that houses the shelter’s large dogs.

None of the dogs was injured, Brayer said.

“That was my worst fear,” she said. “They were really scared. The big ones – they get scared more easily.”

The building fared worse, sustaining damage to the roof and electrical and heating systems.

“It’s pretty extensive. we won’t be able to use them,” Brayer said.

Right now, the dogs are being housed in spare kennel space, but Brayer said that’s only a short-term solution.

“We’re just crossing our fingers that we don’t get more dogs in because because we’re out of room,” she said.

My Pet World: Electronic fencing not always effective or humane

I stored up this trio of challenging, complex questions seeking my opinion on some major issues. I’m happy to offer my views.

Q. what do you think of electronic fencing? my neighbors have it to keep their dog in the yard, and it works. I’m considering the same thing because real fences aren’t allowed in our community.

A. I’m not a fan of electronic fencing. I prefer a real fence, one high enough that a dog can’t jump it. However, I do understand that, depending on the size of your property, real fencing can be more expensive. Also, some communities prohibit it.

So, what do you do? Right now, you’re probably taking your dog for leash walks. Dogs that walk the neighborhood generally are better socialized and well exercised than those confined to their yards.

I have two primary concerns about electronic fencing:

Some companies are pretty much, the consumer buys it, the consumer installs it, the consumer trains the dog. There’s little real assistance available. If you must have electronic fencing, I prefer companies that provide hands-on professional guidance, making a house call to install the fence and helping to train your dog.

My second concern is that some dogs eventually will disregard the shock when a stimulus comes along that’s more exciting than the risk of being shocked. A dog may disregard the fencing to chase a squirrel, another dog or anything the pet finds exciting.

All it takes is one escape for a dog to be hit by a car or get lost (hopefully, the pet is microchipped for identification). A stray dog might even find its way inside your fencing, which could be a problem if the interloper is aggressive. I know such incidents don’t happen every day, but we’ve had letters from readers who’ve witnessed them.

Whatever type of containment you choose, back yards are not baby sitters. whether chained, behind real or electronic fencing, some dogs can become aggressive. sometimes people even steal dogs from yards. And in extreme weather, it’s never a good idea to leave a dog outside for long.

Q. what do you think of shelters that advertise they’re “no-kill”? the issue has become controversial.

A. Entire books address your seemingly simple question. Here’s a summary:

“No-kill” is a marketing term that has garnered public attention, which is a good thing. There’s no way we should be content killing as many innocent animals as we do.

Having said that, let’s define “no-kill.” the truth is, some animals may have incurable diseases or serious behavioral issues. It’s easy to argue that these pets are better off being euthanized.

However, what about shelters that claim to be “no-kill” but do, in fact, kill animals with solvable medical or behavior problems? Are the shelter personnel hypocritical? I’m not sure. the definition of “no kill” varies from shelter to shelter.

Of even greater concern are shelters that claim the ethical high ground because they don’t kill. This suggests other facilities that euthanize pets are ethically wrong and are “killers.” Guess which shelter donors gravitate toward?

Of course, no-kill facilities typically fill up quickly. But unwanted animals have to go somewhere. That’s because having a no-kill facility or two in town doesn’t necessarily correlate to increased spaying/neutering or more owners committed to keeping their animals. Also, the shaky economy has led to increased relinquishments in many communities.

Under such circumstances, when no-kill shelters turn people away, they’re forced to go elsewhere to have pets euthanized, simply shifting the problem. There’s a hard cost associated with euthanasia as well as a cost in public perception. While overall, the “no-kill” movement has moved the needle (to fewer euthanasias), the growing divide between “no-kill” and “kill” is not benefiting communities or pets.

Q. in light of what happened to all those wild animals that got loose in Ohio, what do you think about people keeping exotic pets?

A. I suppose I’m guilty of this myself. One of our pets is a Northern Blue-Tongue Skink, a lizard that can grow to about 2 feet. in the wild, they eat insects and vegetation and are hardly a danger to people. While not truly domestic, they’re easily tamed. our skink (and her parents going back several generations) was born in captivity, so wild numbers were not diminished. besides, these skinks are fairly common in Australia and nearby islands.

While lizards aren’t lions or tigers, where do you draw the line? I’m concerned that many wild animals require difficult care in captivity. some are endangered, and people who keep such animals are harming the species by not participating in a larger breeding program like those as zoos and certified wildlife facilities. Also, people who keep wild animals are injured frequently.

While I believe the sheriff’s department in Zanesville, Ohio, suffered from a serious trigger finger (after all, Columbus Zoo staffers were available to tranquilize), there was a clear potential danger to the public.

Lions, tigers, venomous snakes, alligators and a long list of other wild animals found on private property in America belong instead in professional captive environments such as zoos or facilities run by certified wildlife rehabbers, not in back yards or ranches.

Do Invisible Dog fences work?

Do the buried wire type electronic fences really work? I have an escape artist dog and need a fence to contain her within our yard. I have read about the Intek invisible fence system and would like to know if anyone has had experience with this type of fence. Does it actually work? Do the collars hurt the dog or is it just a static charge?

A friend of mine used one on his cattle dog – a known escape artist. after training the dog with the system it worked a treat. it was amazing to see how the dog just avoided the open gap in the fence. Why don't you just get a bigger fence OR get chicken wire to make the fence taller then flare in the top bit (like people do to stop their cats getting out of their gardens).

Get a stake that goes into the ground with a long clip lead attached to it.

Why shock a dog with electricity for no reason?

yes, it works. we had one around our yard and we even put a small one around our dining room because we have an expensive rug in there. it usually beeps when they get close which scares them and they stop before it shocks them and they learn after once or twice not to go past it. we had ours for 8 years and the dog never really tried to leave once she learned

It worked for my escape artist dog. and yes, the collars hurt, that's the point. but it's not horrible, it's like a pinch. You just have to carefully monitor how strong that shock is, it can definitely get out of hand.

yes they do work. i've seen a bunch of them with a bunch of different dogs. once they get to the barrier it sends off a very unpleasant signal to the dog (not sure if its a shock or a bad noise or whatever) but it works like a charm.

Not always. There is always the chance your dog will find something on the other side worth taking the shock. not to mention the fact they do NOTHING to keep other animals out.

Yes, they do for most dogs. I have two dogs: a fairly mellow golden retriever mix and a hard headed sheltie who loves to run. we have a large fenced back yard but the sheltie was always slipping out the front door between one of the kid's legs or figuring out a way to open gates or doors. about 5 years ago I went to an invisible fence. now you have to realize that the dogs can't just be let out – they need to be trained. it took about a month for my two to get it consistently. most systems come with a training booklet or video- you just follow the directions. it plus I found was that the wire does not have to be buried. I buried it the first time but when we moved, the guy I bought the second system from told me it could just be put on-ground with lawn staples. I did that and the grass grew over it and you can't tell where the wire is anymore. he also told me that we could also run more than one run back and forth to create a wider zone for problem areas. Use a stubborn dog collar with multiple settings. The retriever is on next to the lowest setting and sheltie is on next to the highest. I notice the people fussing about how cruel it is never said they had any experience with it. I love my dogs and I tested it on myself (on all the settings) before putting the collar on the dogs. it is a more of surprise- like a sharp snap rather than actual pain. as long as you take the time to teach them what it is all about, it works well and it keeps our dogs in the yard. The collar beeps before the dog gets close enough for a shock and the dog know what the beep means and back off. I doubt either of our dogs has actually been shocked in a long time. The electric went off for 2 days when we had storms and neither dog went anywhere near the boundaries in spite of the system not working because they knew their boundaries.
